CrimeMetric

The CrimeMetric API

Modeled crime rates per resident for any U.S. address, point or census block group: 16 crime types and four summaries, each with the expected count a year, an index against the U.S. rate, an 80% interval and a confidence level. Also an MCP server, so Claude and other assistants can look up a place directly.

One call per place

Send an address, a latitude and longitude, or a 12-digit block group id. The API finds the census block group and returns its numbers. Block groups with fewer than 100 residents return expected counts but no index, since a rate per resident means little there.

  • index: crimes per resident against the U.S. rate, where 100 is the U.S. and 200 is twice it.
  • index_p10 to index_p90: the 80% interval around the estimate. Wide ranges mean less data behind the number; confidence sums that up as high, medium or low.
  • exposure_index: the same comparison against everyone present (residents, workers and visitors). Downtowns often read high per resident and much lower by exposure, as in this example.
  • city_index and county_index: the surrounding city and county, for context.

In Claude or another MCP client

claude mcp add --transport http crimemetric https://api.crimemetric.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $CRIMEMETRIC_KEY"

The server exposes one tool, crime_index, which takes an address, coordinates or block group.

Request

curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $CRIMEMETRIC_KEY" \
  "https://api.crimemetric.com/v1/index?address=400+S+Eagle+St,+Naperville,+IL"

What the numbers are

  • Estimates, not incident records. Each agency's crimes as reported to the FBI are modeled across the census block groups it serves. The API never returns individual incidents or addresses of crimes.
  • All 50 states and DC: 239,780 block groups from the 2020 census.
  • Not for decisions about individual people, such as tenant screening, lending, insurance underwriting or hiring. See the API terms.
  • Method and validation
