How the numbers are made

Police agencies' crime reports to the FBI, modeled across the 2020 census block groups each agency serves. In tests on 1,123 places with their own incident records, an average of 30% of a place's crime landed in the wrong neighborhoods, against 43% when crime is spread by where people live. Model updated Oct 20, 2026.
