Data sources
Every number on this site is a model estimate built from public data. This is what goes in, and how much of each state rests on detailed FBI reports.
Crime totals
- FBI Crime Data Explorer: incident-based reports (NIBRS)Each agency's reported crimes by type for 2021 to 2025. The 2026 figures move each agency's totals forward with the FBI's year-to-date counts.
- FBI Summary Reporting SystemAnnual summary counts for agencies that don't send incident-based reports.
Where crime happens within an agency's area
- Police incident recordsIncident records that police departments publish, through city open-data portals and public crime maps, train the model that places each agency's crime across its neighborhoods. Individual incidents are never shown or republished here.
- U.S. Census Bureau2020 census block groups and population; American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates for neighborhood characteristics. The model never uses race, ethnicity, ancestry, national origin or language data.
- LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (2023)Jobs located in each block group and employed residents, which together approximate the daytime population.
- Overture Maps Foundation, places (September 2026 release)Points of interest such as stores, restaurants and bars, counted per block group. Licensed under CDLA Permissive 2.0, Apache 2.0 or CC0, depending on the source.
- Census cartographic boundary files (2020)The outlines on the neighborhood maps.
How each state's totals are sourced
Share of residents by where their local agency's crime totals come from. Detailed reports give the most reliable totals. Some agencies send only summary counts; where an agency sent nothing this year, its totals come from its own past reports or from similar agencies.
